As a part of South-east Asia, Vietnam, however, has got a different kind of weather. While most of the countries nearby show a typical tropical climate, the north of this one always suffer from a genuine winter from December to February. In fact, the temperatures in Hanoi in winter are as low as those in South Europe at the same time. As a result, many non-experienced tourists don’t bring enough warm clothes to cope with the cold. And they must prioritize the solution to pass this tough situation instead of enjoying all attractions there entirely. Some conclude that this is not the best time to visit Hanoi as well.
Nonetheless, compared with other months, I have to say that their conclusion is not really true. Amazingly, different seasons grant Hanoi different beauty. For example, in the case travelers don’t prefer the winter in the city, they will certainly miss a lot of fascinating things. So, in the end, what is the best period to visit Hanoi exactly? The answer, however, is on the basis of your private feelings. This can be done easily by what I will show you below.
From December to February
Apparently, in Western countries, this period consists of a long holiday, allowing citizens to travel far from their homes. Therefore, it is considered as the peak tourist season in Vietnam as well, leading to the significant increase in the price for a rent room. If you check certain hotels in Hanoi, they offer you with two separate prices, one for the rest of the year, one for December, January and February. The latter is higher than the former, though. That’s why on the condition that you have limited budget, and have to save up your money as much as possible, traveling in Hanoi at that time is not advisable.
But what will you observe in the city in winter apart from a few well-known attractions such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Old Quarter easy to be seen every time? In fact, on New Year’s Eve, in the center of Hanoi, there is never lack of numerous dynamic activities to welcome a new year. Take Countdown Festival in front of Hanoi Opera House, or musical performances around Hoan Kiem Lake as an example. You will be able to blend into the crowdedness and uproar of Hanoi.
Do not miss Tet Holiday
After a month, the most important event of the Vietnamese, Tet Holiday, takes place. The streets in Hanoi are frequently adorned with countless decorated objects, making them become more vivid. Moreover, this is the best time to let you study more about the peculiar cultural aspects of local people’s life. Some common deeds on Tet Holiday are to visit temples and pagodas to pray for happiness, prosperity and health, to obey words written by talented scholars for fortunate, and to cook special meals. Tasting Banh Chung, and Banh Giay, two types of traditional Vietnamese cakes are only possible at that time. A food lover shouldn’t miss them.
From March to May
This time is known as the spring and the beginning of the summer in the northern part of Vietnam. Actually, in March, the weather is dominated by high humidity, sometimes the level up to nearly 100%, causing drizzle throughout a day, and makeing everything unable to be naturally dried. Nevertheless, it is the requisite condition for the growth of plants. This is reflected in April, when the climate is drier and warmer, very advantageous to an outdoor excursion. When you walk along any street in Hanoi, you can contemplate bright green leaves emerging in trees to mark a milestone of new life.
Next is May. The temperatures at that time are usually over 33 degree of Celsius. Although it is quite hot, plenty of flowers exhibit their beauty, turning Hanoi to a colorful city again. For instance, while flamboyant flower is very prominent due to its red hues, Queen’s Crape-myrtle enhances the romance of Hanoi with its purple shades. Consequently, flower admirers often select May as the best time to visit Hanoi.
From June to August
As you arrive in the city from June to August, you will feel exactly how rough Hanoi’s weather is. June is not the appreciated month for open-air travel because the sunlight may heat the temperature to 40 degree of Celsius. If you do not wear enough protective clothes, your skin will be burned. But one intriguing choice for you in June is to see lotus flower in full bloom at West Lake.
The weather condition becomes better when July and August come. But torrential rains impede you to enjoy the peace and antiqueness of Hanoi considerably. If unfortunate, tropical storms may attack the city. And intense winds could bring destruction to Hanoi. In the case the rainfall is too much, certain streets in Hanoi will be waterlogged, occasionally enabling you to travel by boat. Perhaps, this would be your unforgettable moment. Anyway, these three months are not really favorable periods to visit Hanoi, I think.
From September to November
Hanoi seems to show newly orange clothes from September to November, the time the locals understand as the autumn. Escaping from high temperatures and terrible rains, the weather is a bit colder and crisper due to the cold wind from China. Deciduous trees are what you are able to observe around the road in the inner city. Solely wander under the trees to hear the sound of falling leaves. And then you are likely to blend yourself into the tranquility of the city. Nothing would be greater than seeking peace in mind by this way. Aside from this, Vietnam Independence Day is annually celebrated on September 2nd. Just stop at Ba Dinh Square. You can see a magnificent parade demonstrated by Vietnamese army, police and civilians there. Do not neglect it if you can visit Hanoi at that time.
Especially, blackboard flower blooms from October to November, creating a memorable odor throughout a street. Some Hanoians like placing a piece of the flower in their houses to make them more fragrant. Once you smell this perfume, I assure that it will stick in your mind forever. Therefore, the autumn is a preferable time on the condition that you want to explore the distinct of Hanoi.
I believe that the best time to visit Hanoi is never agreeable among foreign travelers and even the Vietnamese. In my opinion, I cannot choose the greatest season to attend this time-honored city as well. But whenever it’s possible, I will never miss the opportunity for my holiday in Hanoi.
